Fast Forward
Upon joining the Georgia Public Broadcasting team, I was tasked with the opportunity to reimagine and update the user experience of Fast Forward on GPB.org. A GPB Education original series, Fast Forward contains of 16 episodes that present Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in a fun and engaging way by giving students a glimpse into how employees in businesses and organizations of Georgia apply STEM in their professional careers.
Outreach specialists both promote and teach schools across the state of Georgia how to use GPB Education’s resources. Through surveys and general interviews, feedback is collected on our portfolio of resources. For this redesign we consolidated the backlog of comments to the above major pain points.
PREVIOUS DESIGN
The previous UX for the Fast Forward series utilized a “blog style” design that allowed for education producers to dynamically make updates to the series by posting stories aligned to the series. While this design worked well for the series at the time of its launch, stakeholders conveyed the frustrations in the discoverability of many of the series clips and videos.
PBS Learning Media and Discovery Education lead the charge in K-12 free online learning resource platforms. GPB Education took care in evaluating these platforms and implementing similar functionality that would be a strong asset to Fast Forward and other GPB Education properties.
The Fast Forward site is built through a series of views and node queues that ensured the ability to develop the site swiftly and in-house. This also carried over much familiarity across the GPB Education site and allowed a design framework for future GPB Education properties to be created.
REDESIGN
The challenge with redesigning this property was balancing a sub web presence with its own unique look and feel, within GPB's already robust online lineup. This Fast Forward redesign established elements that would later be carried over into other Education properties providing educators and students with a familiar UI, as they move throughout GPB.org's Education resources.
Key design elements such as the navigation menu, iconography, drop down menus, and slideshows were used to better organize and consolidate legacy content.
INTERACTIVE MAP
Built using Tumult Hype 5 and Javascript, the Fast Forward Interactive Map provides an interactive way for students to navigate through each Georgia Region and watch episodes from the Fast Forward series.
